The Marco de Fundação da Cidade do Salvador, or City of Salvador Foundation Landmark, stands as a proud reminder of Salvador's rich colonial history. Inaugurated on March 29, 1952, the monument commemorates the 400th anniversary of the city's founding. Salvador, Bahia, was established in 1549 as the first capital of Brazil, making this site a pivotal point in the nation's history. The monument consists of a six-meter-high pillar of Lioz limestone, a material frequently used in Portuguese monuments, marked with the symbols of the Portuguese Crown and the Cross of Christ. A panel of azulejo tiles depicts the arrival of Tomé de Sousa, the first governor-general of Bahia, and his party ready to build the city. The pillar was carved by Portuguese artist João Fragoso. The azulejo panel was created by Eduardo Gomes in 2003, replicating an original design by Joaquim Rebocho. Located at the north end of Porto da Barra Beach, directly below the Forte de São Diogo, the Marco offers stunning views and a tangible connection to the past. The surrounding area is vibrant with local life, offering opportunities to witness local traditions and crafts.
