This unique architecture, inspired by European fortresses like Castel Sant'Angelo in Italy, allowed for 360-degree defense, making it a key strategic point.Construction began in 1608 and was completed in 1623, initially built from wood. It played a crucial role in defending Salvador against Dutch invasions in the 17th century. The Dutch captured it in 1624 and used it to attack the city. Later, it was rebuilt with stone and lime, and by 1759, it boasted 54 bronze and iron cannons. Throughout the 19th century, the fort served as a political prison.Today, São Marcelo Fort is a popular tourist attraction, offering guided tours and panoramic views of Salvador and the bay. Visitors can explore its historic walls and learn about its storied past. It also serves as a venue for cultural events, reinforcing its importance as a cultural symbol of Salvador.
