Discover more about Carybé Arts Space - São Diogo Fort

Located in Salvador’s picturesque Porto da Barra neighborhood, the Carybé Arts Space at São Diogo Fort is a magnificent historical and cultural landmark. The São Diogo Fort was initially constructed between 1609 and 1613, and rebuilt between 1626 and 1635, to defend the city from invasions. The fort received a modern update in 2016 when it began housing the Carybé Arts Space. Inside, visitors are treated to a diverse collection of artworks that celebrate Bahian culture and the legacy of Carybé (Hector Julio Páride Bernabó), a renowned artist who captured the vibrancy of Afro-Brazilian culture in over 5,000 works. While Carybé worked with many techniques, he preferred murals because they allowed everyone to appreciate his art. The space uses digital media and virtual reality to immerse visitors in Carybé's prints, drawings, illustrations, ceramics, sculptures, and murals. A set of projectors color the space with Carybé's drawings, which appear and disappear on the inner walls of the Fort. Projections on the facade of the Fort create a fantastic reality. The fort's architecture is a testament to colonial history, with sturdy stone walls and well-preserved structures. The location also offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. The surrounding area is lively, with cafes and shops offering local delicacies and souvenirs.
