Located in the Itaquera district of eastern São Paulo, Carmo Park provides a welcome escape from the bustling city. Covering approximately 1.5 million square meters, the park is one of the largest urban parks in the region, boasting a significant reserve of preserved Atlantic Forest with diverse flora and fauna. The park's history dates back to the mid-1950s when the area belonged to Oscar Americano, who used the estate as a weekend retreat. In 1976, part of the land was acquired by the city and transformed into a public park. In July 2012, the park was renamed Parque do Carmo – Olavo Egydio Setúbal in honor of the former mayor who initiated the green space. Visitors can explore various attractions within the park, including the Environmental Museum, which showcases the area's history and its connection to Japanese immigrants. The park also features lakes, an open-air amphitheater, exercise equipment, soccer fields, bike paths, playgrounds, and picnic areas. One of the park's highlights is the Cherry Blossom Grove, the second largest outside Japan, with thousands of cherry trees. The annual Cherry Blossom Festival, or Festa das Cerejeiras, celebrates the blooming of the trees and Japanese culture. Carmo Park is home to a wide variety of animals, with 134 recorded species, including 117 species of birds. Visitors may spot various birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians throughout the park. The park also offers accessible facilities, including exercise equipment, restrooms, and pathways.
