Discover more about Escadaria do Patapio

Escadaria do Patapio, located in São Paulo's trendy Vila Madalena neighborhood, is more than just a staircase; it's a vibrant explosion of art and culture. This public stairway, originally a simple passage connecting Medeiros de Albuquerque and Patápio Silva streets, has been transformed into a mesmerizing urban canvas. In 2015, as part of the Design Weekend event, the then-gritty staircase was adorned with decorative tiles through the vision of Brazilian plastic artist Élcio Torres and the support of a local ceramic store. Local artists, residents, and visitors collaborated to imprint their art on the tiles, which were then installed on the steps. Over time, the walls surrounding the 94 steps became a canvas for artists expressing themselves through colorful murals, posters, and graffiti. The staircase is named in honor of Patápio Silva, a celebrated Brazilian flutist who passed away at a young age. Today, Escadaria do Patapio stands in contrast to the crowded Escadaria Selarón in Rio de Janeiro, offering a more intimate and less tourist-heavy experience. Its proximity to Batman's Alley (Beco do Batman), another open-air gallery, makes it easy to visit both attractions in one go.
