The museum is located within the headquarters of the Museum of the American Man Foundation (FUMDHAM), established through a collaboration between Brazilian and French scientists who began working in the region in 1973. FUMDHAM is a non-profit organization that partners with municipal, state, and federal governments. The museum's permanent exhibition focuses on the trajectory of human beings in the Americas, starting from the evolution of hominids 100,000 years ago to the arrival of European colonizers. The collection includes approximately 90 pieces, including funerary urns, lapidary objects, drawings, skeletons, and bones. Visitors can also learn about the flora and fauna of the region in the past, as well as excavations at Boqueirão da Pedra Furada, known as the oldest archaeological site in the Americas. The museum also has technical reserves that store archeological, paleontological, zoological, and botanical materials, along with laboratories. The museum is closely linked to the Serra da Capivara National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site with over 700 archaeological sites containing rock paintings dating back over 12,000 years. In early 2017, the Museum of the American Man began to oversee the park's permanent monitoring and management committee. A visit to the museum provides valuable context before exploring the park's rock art and stunning landscapes.
