Discover more about Copper Mine National Park, Virgin Gorda

Copper Mine National Park, located on the southeastern tip of Virgin Gorda, offers a captivating journey into the island's past. The park's main draw is the ruins of a 19th-century copper mine, established after the islands came under British control in 1837. Cornish miners, seeking new opportunities after the decline of Cornwall's mineral deposits, constructed the mine and extracted ore from 1838 to 1862. Visitors can wander through the remains of the engine house, mine shafts, and a towering chimney, imagining the bustling activity of the mining operation. The extracted ore was transported along Coppermine Road to Spanish Town and then shipped to Wales. The park also boasts stunning views of the Caribbean Sea and the island's rugged coastline. Before the arrival of the Cornish miners, Spaniards mined copper here in the early 18th century. There is also evidence suggesting that Amerindians used the area for copper long before the Europeans, crafting tools and jewelry for trade. Today, the park is also a habitat for the White-tailed tropicbirds, which nest in the cliffs by the sea. Restoration efforts began in 1998 to stabilize the ruins.
