Discover more about Ram Head Peak

Ram Head Peak presents a unique hiking experience in the Virgin Islands National Park, combining coastal beauty with a touch of desert-like scenery. The 2.3-mile round trip trail, often called Rams Head, is considered moderately difficult, making it accessible to most hikers. The hike typically takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, allowing ample time to soak in the surroundings. The trail begins at Salt Pond Bay, a beautiful beach perfect for a pre- or post-hike swim. From there, hikers traverse a mix of sandy stretches, rocky paths, and a section along Blue Cobblestone Beach. As you ascend towards Ram Head, the landscape transforms into a cacti-filled terrain, offering a unique visual treat. At the summit, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of St. John's south shore, the Caribbean Sea, and, on clear days, St. Croix. The peak itself is a rocky, open area with little to no shade, so it's essential to bring water and sun protection. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including goats and various bird species, adding to the natural charm of the area. Historically, Ram Head is believed to have been a stronghold for Akwamu tribesmen who rebelled against slavery in 1733. Facing defeat, the warriors chose suicide over capture, adding a layer of historical significance to the site. Today, Ram Head stands as a testament to both natural beauty and historical resilience.
