Getting There

  • Driving

    From Cruz Bay, head east on Route 20 (North Shore Road) for approximately 1.8 miles. The parking area for Hawksnest Beach will be on your left. Parking is free but can fill up quickly, especially in the morning. Arrive early to secure a spot. There are no tolls on this route.

  • Taxi

    From the Cruz Bay Ferry Dock, taxis, including safari taxis, are readily available to take you to Hawksnest Beach. The fare is typically around $10-15 per person. Confirm the price with the driver before departing. The ride is approximately 6 minutes.

  • Public Transport

    The VITRAN bus system services various areas of the island and usually runs Monday - Friday. Check the schedule for the most up-to-date information. The bus will drop you off on the main road, from which you will have to walk a short distance to the beach. The fare is $1 per person.

Situated within the Virgin Islands National Park, this medium-sized beach is the first major beach you encounter when traveling east from Cruz Bay. Its convenient location and ample parking make it a popular choice for families and those seeking a quick dip in the Caribbean Sea. The beach itself boasts soft, white sand fringed by lush sea grape and shade trees, offering plenty of respite from the sun. The calm, clear waters are perfect for swimming and wading, particularly for families with children. Snorkeling enthusiasts will find a shallow reef located just off the center of the beach, teeming with colorful fish and marine life. While the coral reef may be weathered in some areas, snorkelers can still spot elkhorn coral, brain coral, sea fans, and a variety of fish, including parrotfish, angelfish, and the occasional sea turtle. Hawksnest Beach is also equipped with amenities that enhance the visitor experience. Two pavilions offer covered seating areas, ideal for family gatherings or group events. Historically, the bay was known as Hogsnest by European settlers, with the name evolving over time. It is believed that the name Hawksnest either comes from the hawks inhabiting the island or from the hawksbill turtles which used to nest nearby. Today, Hawksnest Beach continues to be a beloved destination, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, recreational activities, and convenient facilities for all to enjoy.
