Ram Head Peak, West End Travel Guide

Ram Head Peak, marking the southernmost point on St. John, is a destination accessible via the Ram Head Trail within the Virgin Islands National Park. The 2.3-mile round trip hike, rated as moderate in difficulty, offers a distinctive blend of beach and mountain scenery.The trail begins at Salt Pond Bay, a 35-minute drive from Cruz Bay. The path leads along a rocky beach, past the Salt Pond, and then ascends through a landscape dotted with cacti, offering a unique desert-like feel. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including goats and various bird species. The final stretch involves switchbacks leading to the rocky bluff of Ram Head.At the summit, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of St. John's south shore, the Caribbean Sea, and, on clear days, St. Croix. The exposed and windy conditions at the top underscore the rugged beauty of this unique location. The area is thought to have been a stronghold for Akwamu tribesmen who rebelled against slavery in 1733. When the tides of battle turned against the rebels, a group of warriors committed suicide here rather than face capture.
