    Driving

From Cruz Bay, drive east on either North Shore Road or Centerline Road towards Coral Bay. Turn right onto Route 107 and continue for approximately 4 miles until you see the parking lot for Salt Pond Bay on your left. Parking is free, but the lot fills up quickly, especially during peak season, so arrive early.

    Taxi

Taxis are available from Cruz Bay to Salt Pond Bay. Confirm the fare and arrange a pick-up time for your return, as taxis do not routinely patrol the area. A one-way taxi ride from Cruz Bay to Salt Pond Bay typically costs around $30-$40. There are no additional fees to access the trail.

    Walking

From the Salt Pond Bay parking lot, walk towards Salt Pond Bay Beach. The trail to Ram Head begins at the eastern end of the beach. Follow the path along the rocky shoreline, and you'll soon find the marked trail that ascends towards Ram Head.

    Local tips

Start your hike early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and crowds.
Bring plenty of water and sun protection, as there is little shade along the trail.
Wear sturdy shoes due to the rocky and uneven terrain.
Combine your hike with a swim and snorkel at Salt Pond Bay or Blue Cobblestone Beach.

Discover more about Ram Head Peak

Ram Head Peak, marking the southernmost point on St. John, is a destination accessible via the Ram Head Trail within the Virgin Islands National Park. The 2.3-mile round trip hike, rated as moderate in difficulty, offers a distinctive blend of beach and mountain scenery. The trail begins at Salt Pond Bay, a 35-minute drive from Cruz Bay. The path leads along a rocky beach, past the Salt Pond, and then ascends through a landscape dotted with cacti, offering a unique desert-like feel. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including goats and various bird species. The final stretch involves switchbacks leading to the rocky bluff of Ram Head. At the summit, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of St. John's south shore, the Caribbean Sea, and, on clear days, St. Croix. The exposed and windy conditions at the top underscore the rugged beauty of this unique location. The area is thought to have been a stronghold for Akwamu tribesmen who rebelled against slavery in 1733. When the tides of battle turned against the rebels, a group of warriors committed suicide here rather than face capture.
