Saltpond Bay: A Tranquil Escape on St. John

Saltpond Bay is a gem on St. John's southeastern coast, known for its calm, clear waters and beautiful natural surroundings. The bay is accessible via a short, moderately steep, and rocky 7-10 minute hike from the parking lot, which helps to keep the beach relatively uncrowded. The beach itself is a crescent of white sand, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. The waters are generally calm, making it a great spot for families and less experienced swimmers. Snorkeling is a popular activity here, with the best spots located along the rocky eastern shoreline and around a set of rocks in the middle of the bay. Keep an eye out for colorful coral, sea turtles, rays, and various reef fish. Beyond the beach, Saltpond Bay offers access to two notable hiking trails. The Drunk Bay Trail is an easy.25-mile walk that passes the salt pond on the way to Drunk Bay, where visitors have created unique sculptures from coral and stones. The Ram Head Trail is a more challenging.9-mile hike to the southernmost point of St. John, rewarding hikers with breathtaking panoramic views. The trail is steep and rocky in places, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Salt Pond itself is a unique geological feature. Saltwater enters the pond through seepage and waves, and the pond's below-sea-level location prevents significant outflow, leading to salt production during dry spells. While Saltpond Bay offers fewer amenities than some of the more popular North Shore beaches, it provides a more secluded and natural experience. The beach has picnic tables and restroom facilities.
