Discover more about Virgin Gorda Peak

Gorda Peak National Park, established in 1974, protects one of the last remaining examples of Caribbean dry forest in the region. Rising to 1,370 feet (414 meters), Gorda Peak is the highest point on Virgin Gorda, offering stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding islands and the Caribbean Sea. The park features two main hiking trails leading to the summit. The longer trail, approximately 1.5 miles, offers a more gradual ascent, while the shorter trail is steeper and more direct, taking around 20-25 minutes. Though the lookout tower was toppled by Hurricane Irma, a nearby boulder provides a decent vantage point. As you hike, keep an eye out for the diverse flora and fauna, including native plant species and the tiny Virgin Gorda dwarf sphaero, one of the world's smallest lizards. The park is also home to various bird species, including the Antillean Crested Hummingbird. Picnic sites are available along the trails, offering a chance to rest and enjoy the natural surroundings. Gorda Peak's history extends back to the island's early inhabitants, the Arawak and Carib people. Later, the island was spotted by Christopher Columbus, and it eventually became a site for sugar plantations under British rule. Today, the park stands as a testament to conservation efforts and the island's commitment to sustainable tourism.
