Bukit Shahbandar: Brunei's Hiker's Haven
Hike through lush trails and discover panoramic views at Bukit Shahbandar, Brunei's popular forest recreation park.
Bukit Shahbandar, also known as Bukit Shahbandar Forest Recreation Park, is a protected recreational forest spanning 234 hectares in the Brunei-Muara District. Located approximately 15 kilometers from Bandar Seri Begawan, it's a convenient escape from the city. The park's name, Shahbandar, is a reference to a high-ranking official who was responsible for trade and maritime activities during the Sultanate's golden age. Originally a cattle farm, the area was transformed into a recreational space with hiking trails in 1980. The Forestry Department completed its full development in 1998, creating a popular destination for outdoor leisure. The park features a mix of native kerangas woodland, stands of Acacia mangium, and Caribbean pine trees. Visitors can explore a network of trails, including the popular nine hills trail, suitable for various fitness levels. These trails wind through lush rainforest, offering opportunities for wildlife spotting, including monkeys and various bird species. Scenic lookouts provide panoramic views of the South China Sea, Bandar Seri Begawan, and the surrounding areas. The park also features facilities such as children's play areas, workout equipment, a fishing pond, and refreshment stalls.

- Bring plenty of water and snacks, as there are limited facilities within the park.
- Don't forget insect repellent to keep mosquitoes and other bugs at bay.
