Discover more about Tasek Merimbun

Tasek Merimbun, Brunei's largest natural lake, is a jewel within the Tasek Merimbun Heritage Park in the Tutong District. Approximately 70 kilometers from Bandar Seri Begawan, this S-shaped lake is the centerpiece of a 7,800-hectare park, offering a tranquil escape into nature. Declared as Brunei's first national park and an ASEAN Heritage Park in 1984, it holds significant ecological and cultural value. The lake's dark waters, caused by tannins from falling leaves, create a unique 'blackwater' effect, reflecting the surrounding lush rainforest. This environment supports diverse ecosystems, including peat swamp forests, mangroves, and lowland mixed dipterocarp forests. The park is home to a wide array of flora and fauna, including over 200 bird species, making it an Important Bird Area recognized by BirdLife International. Keep an eye out for pitcher plants and the valuable agar wood. Historically, the area has been inhabited by the Dusun people for centuries, who consider the lake and forests sacred. According to local stories, the lake was discovered by Imbun, son of a village chief, who found an abundance of resources here. The park also features Pulau Jeludong, an archaeological site with ancient ancestral remains. Visitors can explore the park through environment-friendly boat rides, nature trails, and the canopy walkway offering elevated views. Picnic areas and gazebos provide spots to relax and soak in the scenery. The Tasek Merimbun Heritage Park also features a visitor center with information about the park's history, flora, and fauna.
