Istana Nurul Iman, meaning "Palace of the Light of Faith," is the official residence of the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, and the seat of the Brunei government. Located a few kilometers southwest of Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital city, the palace is nestled on the banks of the Brunei River. Completed in 1984, the palace was built to commemorate Brunei's independence from British rule.The palace was designed by Filipino architect Leandro V. Locsin, who incorporated golden domes and vaulted roofs to reflect Brunei's Islamic and Malay influences. The interior was designed by Khuan Chew, who also worked on the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, featuring opulent gold and marble décor. The palace boasts 1,788 rooms, including 257 bathrooms, and a banquet hall that can accommodate up to 5,000 guests. Other features include a mosque that can accommodate 1,500 people, a 110-car garage, air-conditioned stables for 200 polo ponies, and five swimming pools.Istana Nurul Iman is not generally open to the public. However, during the annual Hari Raya Aidilfitri festival, which marks the end of Ramadan, the Sultan opens the palace to the public for three days. During this time, visitors can meet the Sultan and experience the palace's grandeur. Otherwise, visitors can view the palace from a distance or take a boat trip on the Brunei River to admire its architecture.
