Discover more about Temple of Cybele

Nestled in the coastal town of Balchik, the Temple of Cybele is a captivating archaeological site that provides a window into the region's rich history. Dedicated to Cybele, the Phrygian goddess of fertility and nature, the temple dates back to the end of the 4th or the beginning of the 3rd century BC. It is considered the only Hellenistic temple found in the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. Accidentally discovered in 2007 during construction work, the temple quickly became a site of significant archaeological interest. Excavations revealed a rectangular building with a pronaos (anteroom) leading to a naos (main part of the temple). Inside, archaeologists unearthed numerous artifacts, including statues of Cybele, inscriptions in Ancient Greek, coins, and ceramic vessels. These findings suggest that the temple was in operation for about 700 years, even continuing for a century after Christianity became the official religion. The temple was destroyed by fire in 378 AD during a Gothic invasion and was never restored. A tsunami or flood in 544-545 AD caused a landslide that buried and sealed off the temple, preserving it for centuries. Today, while the temple site itself may not be fully accessible due to its location on private property, artifacts from the temple can be viewed at the Balchik Museum of History.
