Saint Stephen Church: A Byzantine Masterpiece in Nessebar

The Church of Saint Stephen, also known as the New Metropolis, stands as one of Nessebar's most significant cultural monuments. Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, this Byzantine-style church initially served as the Metropolitan Church, succeeding Hagia Sophia. The church was originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which explains the many scenes from her life depicted in the murals. Later, it was named in honor of St. Stephen. Architecturally, the church is a three-nave basilica constructed with stone and brick. The exterior features decorative elements, including ceramic plaques, showcasing the ornamental architectural style of the period. The church was expanded in the 16th century with the addition of a narthex in the 18th century. The interior is adorned with over 250 mural paintings featuring more than 1000 figures. These frescoes, created by three different artists, depict biblical scenes, the miracles of Christ, and the Last Judgment. The church also houses a painted iconostasis from the 16th century, as well as a carved bishop's throne and pulpit from the 18th century.
