Discover more about Trapezitsa Fortress

Trapezitsa Fortress, located on Trapezitsa Hill in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, is a mesmerizing relic of medieval history. Situated on the right bank of the Yantra River, northwest of Tsarevets Hill, it was once the second most important citadel of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The fortress provides a unique blend of stunning vistas and rich heritage, inviting visitors to step back in time and envision the vibrant life that once flourished within its walls.Occupied since the late Chalcolithic period (4200-4000 BC), Trapezitsa's main fortifications were constructed in the 13th and 14th centuries. The hill, naturally protected by the Yantra River on three sides, was fortified with thick stone walls reaching up to 6 meters in height. The fortress had four entrances, with the main gate on the southeast side connected to Tsarevets by a bridge over the Yantra River.During its time as a bustling hub, Trapezitsa housed numerous churches and residential buildings for the nobility and high-ranking clergy. Archaeological excavations have uncovered the foundations of 17 churches, revealing their rich decorations of frescoes and colorful mosaics. The largest of these, Church No. 8 (or the Church of St. Ivan Rilski), held the relics of St. Ivan Rilski from 1195 to 1469 before they were moved to the Rila Monastery.Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins, including restored fortifications, church ruins and other buildings. Some of the churches feature impressive frescoes from the Middle Ages. The southeast tower and gate are excellent viewpoints, offering panoramic views of Veliko Tarnovo, the Yantra River, and the surrounding hills. The newly built museum near the upper funicular station showcases an interactive exposition of Tarnovgrad's history and artifacts discovered in the area.
