The Archaeological Complex of Sveti Nikola, situated approximately 4.5 km southeast of Bansko, unveils the layers of history embedded in this region of Bulgaria. The site, also known as the 'Nameless City', rests at 1100 meters above sea level on a natural stone ridge, offering commanding views and a strategic defensive position. Archaeological investigations, which began in 2003, have revealed the foundations of an early Christian basilica and an adjacent necropolis. Further excavations exposed a fortified settlement enclosed by a robust wall, approximately 1.10 to 1.20 meters thick, encompassing an area of about six decares. Outside this inner city, evidence suggests the settlement once sprawled across 25 to 30 decares, featuring homes, temples, and defensive towers. The settlement endured a fire, after which the stone walls were rebuilt using clay. Finds at the site include diverse pottery, ceramic tiles, and tools, alongside an array of iron objects such as spears, arrows, and axes. Bronze and iron ornaments—fibulae, bracelets and rings—were also unearthed, in addition to numerous glass fragments and a vast collection of coins dating from the 4th century BC to the 18th century AD. These artifacts suggest the settlement was inhabited throughout this extensive period, serving as both a trading center and a strategic observation point. Today, a new church dedicated to Sveti Nikola stands on the foundations of the early Christian basilica. Exploring the complex offers a tangible connection to the past, set against the stunning backdrop of the Pirin Mountains.
