Discover more about Археологически комплекс Свети Никола

The Archaeological Complex of Sveti Nikola, also known as the 'Nameless City,' is located 4.5 km southeast of Bansko, Bulgaria. Situated at 1100 meters above sea level in the northeastern part of the Pirin National Park, the complex sits on a natural stone ridge with steep cliffs on three sides. Archaeological excavations began in 2003, revealing the foundations of an early Christian basilica, which has been restored with donations. Regular excavations started in 2007, led by Vladimir Baryakov, curator and archaeologist at the Bansko Museum Complex. The settlement was once surrounded by a fortress wall, about 1.10-1.20 meters thick, enclosing an area of about six acres. Outside the fortress wall, excavations have revealed the foundations of stone buildings, suggesting the settlement was around 25-30 acres. Numerous artifacts have been discovered at the site, including ceramic vessels, ceramic tiles, roof tiles, and loom weights. Iron objects such as spears, arrows, knives, hoes, axes, needles, and nails have also been found. Ornaments made of bronze and iron, including fibulae, bracelets, rings, earrings, buttons, and belt buckles, have been unearthed. A significant number of glass fragments from window glass and vessels of various shapes have been discovered, along with a diverse collection of coins spanning from the 4th century BC to the 18th century AD. Despite the extensive archaeological finds, the name and location of this settlement are not mentioned in historical records or local legends.
