Located in the heart of Gabrovo, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin, also known as 'Uspenie Bogorodichno,' is a masterpiece of Bulgarian National Revival architecture. The church overlooks one of the most beautiful stone bridges on the Yantra River, offering a picturesque setting for visitors. Constructed in 1865 by the celebrated master Usta Gencho Kanev, who also designed the Aprilov High School, the church was consecrated on October 26, 1866. In 1872, Ilarion Makariopolski was ordained as Metropolitan of Turnovo within its walls. The church was declared a monument of culture of national importance in 1976. The church is designed as a three-nave basilica with two domes and two rows of four columns. Inside, you'll find intricate frescoes and ornate iconography that provide a glimpse into the region's spiritual heritage. The ornamental decoration, featuring stone reliefs with plant and animal motifs, adds to the church's unique charm. In the garden, you can also find the chapel of St. Petka Gabrovska, the spiritual patron of the city.
