Discover more about Vihren

Vihren Peak, soaring to 2,914 meters (9,560 feet), is the undisputed monarch of the Pirin Mountains and the second-highest peak in Bulgaria. This majestic summit, also the third-highest in the Balkans, beckons adventurers with its rugged beauty and panoramic vistas. Until 1942, it was known as Eltepe, meaning "peak of storms," a testament to its often tempestuous weather. Vihren's slopes are primarily composed of marble, a geological feature that distinguishes it from other peaks in the region. This marble composition contributes to the mountain's stark, snow-white appearance, even during the summer months. The karst topography, characterized by the erosion of soluble rocks, results in a landscape devoid of lakes and streams directly on the peak itself. However, several stunning glacial lakes are nestled in the surrounding valleys, including the Vlahini Lakes to the southwest and the Banderitsa Lakes. The most popular route to the summit begins at the Vihren Hut (1,950 m), reachable by car or taxi from Bansko. The trail, marked with red and white, ascends steeply via the Kabata saddle, demanding a good level of fitness. As you ascend, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and deep cirques, including the impressive north face of Vihren. For experienced mountaineers, more challenging routes exist, including those traversing the Koncheto ridge or ascending the 400-meter-high north face. At the foot of Vihren lies the Snezhnika glacieret, Europe's southernmost glacial mass, a reminder of the region's glacial past. The area is also home to the Baikusheva Mura, a 1300-year-old Bosnian pine, the oldest coniferous tree in Bulgaria. Climbing Vihren is an unforgettable experience, offering a blend of physical challenge and natural beauty. From the summit, on a clear day, it is said that you can see as far as the Mediterranean Sea.
