Discover more about Bezbog Lake

Bezbog Lake, situated at 2,239 meters (7,346 feet) above sea level in the Pirin Mountains, is a captivating glacial lake within Bulgaria's Pirin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The lake is located northeast of Bezbog Peak (2,645 m). Approximately 225 meters long and 125 meters wide, with a depth of 7 meters, its clear waters reflect the surrounding peaks, creating a picturesque scene. The lake's name, "Bezbog," translates to "Without God" or "Godless". One legend suggests the name comes from the god Bess, with a tale of a Slavic god Perun's daughter and a neighboring god Bess. Dzhengal, her brother, killed Bess on Mount Bezbog. Bezbog Lake is a starting point for various hiking trails, including routes to Popovo Lake and Bezbog Peak. The area boasts diverse flora and fauna, making it a nature preserve. The lake is fed by the Bezbozhka River, a tributary of the Mesta River. In 1971, an avalanche destroyed the original Bezbog Hut, which was later rebuilt. Today, the Bezbog Hut on the lake's northern shore provides a restaurant and lodging for visitors.
