Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start by driving towards Rila Monastery, which is one of the most famous landmarks in the Rila Mountains. From Sofia, take the E79 highway towards Dupnitsa. After about 70 km, you will reach a junction; follow the signs for Rila Monastery. The drive takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. There is parking available near the monastery, but it can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and holidays. Note that there may be a small parking fee (around 5 BGN).

• Public Transportation

  To reach Rila by public transport, you can take a bus from Sofia to Rila Monastery. Buses depart from the Sofia Central Bus Station (Автогара Сердика). The journey takes about 2 to 2.5 hours and costs approximately 10 BGN one way. Buses typically run every hour, but it’s a good idea to check the schedule in advance as it can vary. Once you arrive at the Rila Monastery bus stop, you can walk to the monastery, which is about a 5-minute walk from the bus stop.

• Taxi

  If you prefer a more direct route, consider taking a taxi from Sofia directly to Rila Monastery. This option is more expensive, costing roughly 100-120 BGN for the trip, but it is convenient and can save time. Make sure to agree on a fare with the driver before starting the journey. This option is ideal if you are traveling in a group, as costs can be shared.

• Hiking

  For the more adventurous visitors, if you are already in the Rila Mountain area, there are numerous hiking trails leading from Rila Monastery into the mountains. Make sure to bring proper hiking gear and check the weather before setting out. Popular trails include routes towards the Seven Rila Lakes, which can be accessed from the monastery. These trails are well-marked, and you can find maps at the monastery. Hiking trips can take several hours, so plan accordingly.
