By Car
If you're traveling by car, start by heading towards Rila Monastery from the nearest town or city. From Blagoevgrad, take the E-79 road towards Dupnitsa. Once in Dupnitsa, follow the signs for Rila Monastery and continue on the road, which will take you through the beautiful Rila Mountain landscape. The last part of the journey involves turning onto a smaller road that leads directly to the monastery. The total driving time is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from Blagoevgrad. Note that parking is available near the monastery, but it can fill up quickly, especially during peak tourist seasons.
By Public Transportation
To reach Rila Monastery by public transport, take a bus from Sofia to Rila Village. Buses depart from the Sofia Central Bus Station multiple times a day, and the journey takes about 2 hours. Once you arrive in Rila Village, you will need to take a local minibus or taxi to the monastery, which is approximately 8 kilometers away. The minibus service is reliable and runs frequently, costing around 1-2 BGN (Bulgarian Lev). Make sure to check the bus schedule in advance as it can vary.
Walking
For adventurous travelers, if you're already in Rila Mountain and nearby, you can hike to Rila Monastery. There are various trails leading to the monastery, with the most popular starting from Rila Village. The hike is approximately 2-3 hours depending on your pace and the specific trail you choose. Make sure to wear appropriate footwear and bring water. The trails are well-marked, but having a map or GPS device can be helpful for first-time hikers.
