Getting There

  • Driving

    From Sofia, take the E79 (A3) highway south towards Kulata. Exit at Kocherinovo and follow the III-107 road towards Rila and the Rila Monastery. The drive is approximately 120 km and takes about 1.5 - 2 hours. Parking is available near the monastery for 5 BGN. Free parking is available on the side of the road before the parking lot.

  • Public Transport

    A direct bus from Sofia to Rila Monastery departs once daily from Sofia Alexander Nevski Cathedral. The journey takes approximately 3 hours and costs $12–17. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Sofia to Rila and then another bus or taxi to the Monastery. Keep in mind that public transport options may be limited, and it's advisable to check the latest schedules.

  • Shuttle

    A shared shuttle bus from Sofia city center is a convenient way to reach Rila Monastery. The shuttle departs from St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral and costs from 30 BGN (approx €15.00) per person, one-way. Advance booking is required.

Nature Park Rila Monastery, one of Bulgaria's largest nature parks, encompasses 252.535 square kilometers in the western Rila Mountains. Established in 1992, the park protects the environment around the Rila Monastery, a symbol of Bulgarian national identity and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.The park's landscape varies from 750 to 2,713 meters in altitude, featuring forests, mountain meadows, alpine areas, and 28 glacial lakes. The Rilska River, the park's main waterway, originates from the Ribni Lakes and flows for 51 km. The park is home to diverse flora and fauna, including rare and protected species. Visitors can explore well-marked trails, discover the Monastery's architecture, and experience the alpine environment.The Rila Monastery, founded in the 10th century by St. Ivan of Rila, has been a spiritual, educational, and cultural center throughout Bulgarian history. The monastery was destroyed by fire at the beginning of the 19th century and rebuilt between 1834 and 1862. The site is free to enter, but there are fees for the museums. The History Museum costs 8 BGN for adults, and the Tower of Hrelyo and Ethnographic Museum each cost 5 BGN. The monastery is open daily, with hours varying by season.
