Discover more about Aladzha Monastery

Aladzha Monastery, whose name means 'motley' or 'bright' in Persian-Arabic, offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of hermit monks who inhabited it during the Middle Ages. The monastery's caves are carved into a towering limestone cliff in the Golden Sands Nature Park, creating a remarkable architectural and historical site. The monastery complex is spread across two levels. The first level houses a monastery church, monastic cells, a refectory, a kitchen, a small cemetery church, a crypt (bone-vault), and farm premises. The second level features a natural cave recess with a monastery chapel. Approximately 600-700 meters west of the monastery lies a group of caves known as the Catacombs, which were inhabited during the early Christian era (5th-6th centuries). After Bulgaria fell under Ottoman rule in the late 14th century, Aladzha Monastery gradually declined and was abandoned around the 15th-16th centuries. Today, it stands as a cultural monument and museum, attracting visitors with its unusual architecture, rich history, and the beautiful natural surroundings of Golden Sands Nature Park. Adding to the experience, a museum displays the monastery's history, and a unique audio-visual show called 'Legends of Aladzha Monastery' has been presented since 2009.
