Discover more about Mishkova Niva

Mishkova Niva, nestled in the Strandzha Mountains near Malko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, is an archaeological site that whispers tales of Thracian settlements and Roman influence. This area, located close to the Turkish border, was once a bustling complex featuring a necropolis, residential buildings, and even mines owned by Roman emperors in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. The site's most prominent feature is its domed tomb, dating back to the 5th to 3rd centuries BC. The tomb, along with the sanctuary, showcases the religious practices of the Thracians, who dedicated the site to Apollo and Artemis. The complex also includes a large circular domed tomb, a rectangular chamber, and sacrificial altars. The sanctuary evolved from a megalithic monument into a sacred space, mirroring the area's mining boom. Archaeological discoveries reveal that Mishkova Niva was constructed and modified over different eras, with the earliest construction dating back to the middle of the 2nd millennium BC. The site's use continued until the 4th-5th centuries AD when Christianity spread throughout the region. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this ancient sanctuary, including the grand mound with its marble structure and the ruins of the tomb. The pediment over the entrance, adorned with a shield, spear, and two human palms, is now housed in the History Museum at Malko Tarnovo.
