Discover more about Cape Kaliakra

Cape Kaliakra, meaning 'Beautiful Headland', is a stunning nature and archaeological reserve on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Located 12 km southeast of Kavarna, this narrow, rocky peninsula juts 2 km into the sea, with cliffs plunging 60-70 meters straight down. Inhabited since the 4th century BC by the Thracian tribe of Tirizi, the cape has been a strategic stronghold for Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians, and Ottomans. Today, visitors can explore the remains of ancient fortresses, including walls, buildings, and a vaulted tomb. A small museum in a cave displays archaeological finds and a model of the fortress. Kaliakra is also rich in legends. The most famous tells the story of 40 Bulgarian maidens who tied their hair together and jumped into the sea to avoid capture by the Ottomans. Another legend says that Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors, created the cape while fleeing the Ottomans. The cape is a haven for wildlife, with over 400 plant species and 310 bird species, including endangered ones. It's a key point on the Via Pontica, a major migratory route for birds. Dolphins can often be spotted in the sea below. Nearby, Bolata Bay offers a picturesque sandy beach, a rarity in this rocky coastal area.
