Sboryanovo Archaeological Reserve: A Thracian Legacy

Sboryanovo Archaeological Reserve, situated near the village of Sveshtari in northeastern Bulgaria, offers a captivating journey into the world of the Thracians, an ancient civilization that once thrived in this region. The reserve is a complex of settlements, temples, and necropolises dating back to antiquity. Covering the bends and surrounding hills of the Krapinets River, Sboryanovo provides a glimpse into a Thracian city and citadel, as well as several necropoli and shrines.At the heart of Sboryanovo lies the Sveshtari Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage site discovered in 1982. This 3rd-century BC Thracian tomb reflects the fundamental structural principles of Thracian cult buildings. The tomb's architectural decor is unique, featuring polychrome half-human, half-plant caryatids and painted murals. The ten female figures carved in high relief on the walls of the central chamber and the decoration of the lunette in its vault are the only examples of this type found so far in the Thracian lands. Historians believe that the Sveshtari caryatids represent the all-mighty Great Goddess of the Thracians.Sboryanovo was once the center of political power for the Getae kings during the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. The Getae were a mighty Thracian tribe that controlled the lands on both sides of the Danube. The reserve offers a glimpse into the religion, economy, and social life of the Thracians. The city was home to craftsmen making goods from iron, silver, gold, and bone. It gained additional importance due to its position on an ancient salt trade road. According to some researchers, their ruler Dromichaetes was buried there. The city was destroyed by an earthquake around 250 BC.Other significant sites within the Sboryanovo Archaeological Reserve include Demir Baba Teke, a Muslim shrine from the 16th century, and the remains of a fortified Thracian city, believed to be Helis, the capital of the Getae.
