Discover more about Aladzha Monastery

Aladzha Monastery, meaning 'motley' or 'bright' in Persian-Arabic, is a remarkable example of a medieval cave monastery. Located 14 km north of Varna, it's situated in the heart of Golden Sands Nature Park. The monastery was inhabited by hermit monks during the 13th and 14th centuries. Its historical significance was recognized in the late 19th century when the Shkorpil brothers, pioneers of Bulgarian archaeology, began systematic exploration. The monastery complex is carved into a nearly 40-meter-high limestone rock and arranged on two levels. The first level houses a monastery church, monastic cells, a dining area, a kitchen, a small cemetery church, a crypt (bone-vault), and farm premises. The second level features a natural cave recess with a monastery chapel. Approximately 600-700 meters west of the monastery lies a group of caves known as the Catacombs, which were inhabited during the early Christian Age (5th-6th centuries). After Bulgaria fell under Ottoman rule in the late 14th century, Aladzha Monastery gradually declined and was likely abandoned around the 15th-16th century. Today, Aladzha Monastery is a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors with its historical and religious significance, as well as its beautiful natural surroundings. A museum on-site displays the monastery's history, and a unique audio-visual show called 'Legends of Aladzha Monastery' has been presented since 2009.
