Founded on August 4, 1999, under the guidance of Minister Mahamadou Ouedraogo and Dr. Oumarou Naon, the museum has become a vital space for exploring the nation's musical history through its diverse collections.The museum's architecture is itself a point of interest, representing a synthesis of traditional housing styles from various ethno-cultural communities within Burkina Faso. The building utilizes stabilized and compacted earth, featuring cupolas and arched openings that capture the eye and reflect the spirit of African architecture.Inside, visitors can explore eight exhibition rooms filled with a diverse collection of traditional musical instruments. The museum displays instruments from all four families: aerophones, membranophones, idiophones, and chordophones. Each instrument, some dating back as far as two centuries, is unique and accompanied by photographs illustrating its cultural context and role in village communication and traditions. Highlights include drums, balafons, yabaras, flutes, and harp-lutes.The Musée de la Musique also offers various services, including guided tours, percussion and dance workshops, video screenings, and mini-concerts. These interactive experiences provide a deeper understanding of the role of music in Burkinabé life.
