Getting There

  • Car

    From the center of Makamba, drive towards the south on the main road. Follow signs for Mihama. After about 20 kilometers, you will reach a junction; take the left fork towards Munyika. Continue straight for another 5 kilometers until you see a sign for Chutes de la Karera Falls on your right. Follow the dirt road leading to the falls, which is about 1 kilometer from the main road. Parking is available near the entrance.

  • Public Transportation

    Start at the bus station in Makamba and board a bus heading towards Mihama. The fare should be around 1,000 Burundian Francs. Once you reach Mihama (approximately 30 minutes), ask the driver or locals for a minibus or motorcycle taxi to Munyika; this should cost about 2,000 Burundian Francs. After reaching Munyika, you can either walk (about 1 km) or hire a local motorcycle taxi to take you directly to the falls for around 1,000 to 2,000 Burundian Francs.

    If you're already in Munyika, simply ask locals for directions to Chutes de la Karera Falls. The falls are approximately a 1 km walk from the main road. Follow the dirt path leading from the road, and keep an eye out for signs directing you to the falls.
