Public Transport

From Bujumbura, take a taxi-brousse (shared minivan) from the central station towards Bururi. The journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and costs between 2,000 to 3,000 BIF. Ask the driver to drop you off at Burunga. From there, hire a local taxi or walk the remaining 5 km to the reserve entrance.
Car

From Bujumbura, head south on Avenue du Commerce and take the N1 road towards Bururi. After approximately 30 km, look for signs directing you to Burunga. Follow the signs for another 15 km until you reach the coordinates 3H6X+V3G, Burunga. The entrance to Bururi Forest Nature Reserve will be marked. Ensure your vehicle is in good condition as some parts of the road may be rough.

Bururi Forest Nature Reserve, located in southwestern Burundi, is a captivating wilderness area steeped in history and biodiversity. Covering 3,300 hectares, this reserve is the southernmost part of the Congo-Nile Ridge forest system. The ancient Burundians considered the forest a link between heaven and earth, protecting it as a place of worship and a necropolis for Queen Mothers. The reserve boasts diverse flora, with 268 plant species representing approximately 9% of Burundi's total plant diversity. Notable tree species include Strombosia, Myrianthus, Tabernaemontana, Newtonia and Entandrophragma. The forest is also home to a variety of fauna, including 22 mammal species, such as chimpanzees, Cercopithecus mitis, and Cercopithecus ascanius. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the 205 bird species, including the Ross's turaco and the grey-cheeked hornbill. The reserve is also home to amphibians, including the rare long finger frog Cardioglossa cyaneospila. Visitors can explore the forest on foot, following botanical lanes and trails. Hiking through the lush greenery offers the chance to spot unique flora and fauna, and the cooler climate provides a refreshing escape. The Siguvyaye River flows through the reserve, featuring waterfalls and scenic landscapes. The Bururi Forest Nature Reserve is not only a place of natural beauty but also a crucial site for conservation and research.
