Bururi Forest Nature Reserve Travel Guide

Bururi Forest Nature Reserve, located in southwestern Burundi, is a captivating wilderness area steeped in history and biodiversity. Covering 3,300 hectares, this reserve is the southernmost part of the Congo-Nile Ridge forest system. The ancient Burundians considered the forest a link between heaven and earth, protecting it as a place of worship and a necropolis for Queen Mothers.The reserve boasts diverse flora, with 268 plant species representing approximately 9% of Burundi's total plant diversity. Notable tree species include Strombosia, Myrianthus, Tabernaemontana, Newtonia and Entandrophragma. The forest is also home to a variety of fauna, including 22 mammal species, such as chimpanzees, Cercopithecus mitis, and Cercopithecus ascanius. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the 205 bird species, including the Ross's turaco and the grey-cheeked hornbill.
