Discover more about Südlichste Nilquelle/Burkhard-Waldecker-Pyramide

The Südlichste Nilquelle/Burkhard-Waldecker-Pyramide, located in Musenyi, Burundi, marks the southernmost source of the Nile River. In 1937, Burkhart Waldecker, a German explorer, identified the Kasumo spring on Mount Kikizi as the source. Waldecker, seeking asylum from Nazi persecution, made significant contributions to African exploration. To commemorate this discovery, Waldecker erected a small pyramid in 1938 near the source and added a bronze plaque with a Latin inscription: "PYRAMIS AD CAPUT NILI MERIDIONALISSIMUM" (Pyramid at the southernmost point of the Nile). The source, Kasumo, feeds into the Luvironza River, which then connects to the Ruvuvu, Kagera, and ultimately Lake Victoria. The pyramid is not only a monument but also a symbol of the confluence of history and geography. Visitors can enjoy a hike to the pyramid's summit, where they are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. The area provides opportunities for photography and immersion in Burundi's natural beauty. Engaging with the local culture and residents can enhance the experience.
