Kite Beach: A Kitesurfer's Paradise

Kite Beach, or Costa de Fragata, is a premier kitesurfing location on Sal Island, Cape Verde. Situated a short distance from the main tourist town of Santa Maria, it's easily accessible and offers ideal conditions for kitesurfing from November to April. During this period, trade winds provide consistent side-onshore breezes, with average speeds between 20 and 30 knots. The beach features a mix of wave and flat-water conditions, making it suitable for various skill levels. Beginners can learn in the relatively flat waters near the shore, while experienced kitesurfers can enjoy the waves further out. Several kitesurfing schools operate on Kite Beach, offering lessons and equipment rentals. Beyond kitesurfing, Kite Beach is also an important nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles between June and October. These endangered creatures come ashore to lay their eggs, offering visitors a unique opportunity to witness this natural phenomenon. The hatching season occurs between August and December, with baby turtles making their way to the ocean. While primarily known for kitesurfing, Kite Beach also provides opportunities for sunbathing and relaxation. However, it's important to note that the beach may lack certain amenities such as lifeguards and restrooms.
