Discover more about Mission San Juan Capistrano

Mission San Juan Capistrano, a historic landmark and museum, stands as a testament to California's rich past. Founded on November 1, 1776, by Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order, it was the seventh of 21 missions established in California. The mission is named after Saint John of Capistrano, a 15th-century theologian and warrior priest. Originally a self-sufficient community built by Spanish Padres and Native Americans, the Mission served as a center for agriculture, industry, education, and religion. Today, it embraces its Native American, Spanish, Mexican, and European heritage, offering visitors a glimpse into early California life. The Mission complex features several notable sites, including the Serra Chapel, the oldest standing building in California where Saint Serra celebrated Mass. The iconic bell wall hosts a daily bell-ringing tradition honoring Saint Serra's legacy. Visitors can explore lush gardens, museum rooms, and original adobe buildings. Exhibits showcase historic and religious artifacts, along with rare paintings. Mission San Juan Capistrano has inspired artists, writers, and musicians, becoming deeply entwined with California's cultural identity. It's also known for the annual return of the swallows, celebrated in song and legend.
