Discover more about The Historic Bakersfield Fox Theater

The Historic Bakersfield Fox Theater, located at 2001 H Street in downtown Bakersfield, stands as a testament to the city's rich artistic heritage. Opened on Christmas Day in 1930, the theater has been a cultural cornerstone, hosting a variety of live performances, concerts, and community events. The theater's architecture is a blend of Spanish Colonial Revival style on the exterior and Art Deco on the interior. Originally, the interior was designed in an atmospheric style with a Mediterranean village theme, creating the illusion of a walled garden with twinkling stars in the night sky. In 1953, the interior was remodeled in the Art Deco style. The building was constructed with poured concrete over steel, which allowed it to withstand the 1952 Kern County earthquake. After closing in 1977 and falling into disrepair, the Fox Theater was saved from demolition in 1994 by the Fox Theater Foundation. Today, the theater hosts a wide array of events, including concerts, film festivals, ballets, comedy shows, and community gatherings. Its central location makes it an ideal starting point for exploring downtown Bakersfield's cafes, shops, and art galleries.
