Located at 1201 Mason Street, the museum offers historical and explanatory exhibits about the cable cars, which can be considered a working museum.Housed within the historic Washington-Mason cable car barn and powerhouse, visitors can explore the origins, technology, and evolution of the cable cars from their inception in 1873 to the present day. The museum features several preserved cable cars, including the Sutter Street Railway grip car 46 and trailer 54 from the 1870s, and the Clay Street Hill Railroad grip car 8, the only surviving car from the first cable car company.Visitors can view the large electric motors and winding wheels that power the cable system from an elevated gallery. Descending below street level, they can witness the haulage cables routed through large sheaves. Exhibits include mechanical devices, tracks, tools, models, and historical photographs. The museum is part of a complex that includes the cable car powerhouse and the car depot, though the depot is not open to the public.The museum is open every day except New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Admission is free, and the museum is accessible to visitors with disabilities.
