Grotto Rock Park, a hidden gem in the Berkeley Hills, presents a unique blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities. Dedicated in 1917, the park was a gift to the City of Berkeley from Mason-McDuffie Real Estate Company during the development of the Northbrae area.
The park's most notable feature is its impressive rock outcropping of Northbrae Rhyolite, inviting visitors to scramble and climb. The light-colored volcanic rock, formed approximately 11.5 million years ago, is ideal for climbing, with even the smallest toeholds able to bear weight. The park provides fantastic views of the San Francisco Bay, making it a perfect spot for relaxation and adventure.
Visitors can enjoy the park's grassy areas for picnics and family gatherings. Stone benches are built into the rocks, enhancing the park's rustic charm and providing comfortable spots to enjoy the scenery. While some areas may have litter, the park generally offers a peaceful environment, less crowded than nearby parks like Indian Rock.

Walking
From the intersection of Grizzly Peak Blvd and Santa Barbara Rd, walk east down Santa Barbara Rd for about 0.5 miles. Grotto Rock Park will be on your right at 879 Santa Barbara Rd.
Public Transport
From Downtown Berkeley BART station, take the AC Transit Line 65 bus towards 'Berkeley Hills'. Ride for approximately 20 minutes until the 'Santa Barbara Rd & Grizzly Peak Blvd' stop. Walk uphill on Santa Barbara Rd for about 0.2 miles; Grotto Rock Park will be on your left. A single AC Transit bus fare is $2.50.
Driving
From downtown Berkeley, head north on Shattuck Ave, then turn left onto University Ave. Follow University Ave until it becomes Grizzly Peak Blvd. Continue on Grizzly Peak Blvd until you reach Santa Barbara Rd. Turn right onto Santa Barbara Rd, and Grotto Rock Park will be on your left after about 0.3 miles. Parking is available around the venue, including a lot nearby and street parking in the neighborhood. Parking meters are in effect on Solano, Alameda, and Colusa.
