This small plaza is a vibrant hub where locals and tourists experience the energy of one of the world's most iconic LGBTQ+ neighborhoods.Originally a temporary solution to create a pedestrian-friendly environment in 2009 as part of San Francisco's "Pavement to Parks" project, the plaza quickly became a beloved gathering place. The Castro/Upper Market Community Benefit District (CBD) played a crucial role in this transformation, overseeing the maintenance, improvements, and furnishing of the space. Its initial success led to permanent park status in 2010.The plaza was dedicated and named in honor of Jane Warner, a respected San Francisco Patrol Special Police Officer. Known as "Officer Jane," she dedicated two decades to keeping the peace in the Castro, Noe Valley, and Mission neighborhoods. Warner was also a columnist for the Bay Area Reporter, penning the LGBT paper's crime column. The City and County of San Francisco dedicated the Jane Warner Plaza on what would have been her 54th birthday, November 7th, 2010, a fitting tribute to her service and dedication.Today, Jane Warner Plaza serves as a multi-faceted space. Its central location makes it a natural meeting point, where friends gather for coffee and people-watch. The colorful café tables and chairs, surrounded by planter boxes filled with trees and flowering plants, create an inviting atmosphere. The F-Market historic streetcar line passes directly through the plaza, adding to its charm and connection to the city’s history. The plaza also acts as a gateway to the Castro’s attractions, such as the Castro Theatre and Harvey Milk Plaza.
