Language of the Birds, Bay Area Travel Guide

Located at the crossroads of North Beach and Chinatown, 'Language of the Birds' is a captivating public art installation that invites passersby to look up and contemplate the power of words and imagination. Created by artist Brian Goggin and co-creator Dorka Keehn, the piece features a flock of twenty-three translucent books suspended in the air, seemingly taking flight from the plaza.Each book is hand-sculpted with open bindings and pages positioned to mimic the wings of birds in motion. At night, LED lights embedded within the books create mesmerizing visual patterns, sometimes subtly pulsing or displaying a zoetrope effect. The artwork is the first solar power-offset public artwork in California.Beneath the 'flying' books, words and phrases are embedded in the plaza floor, appearing as if they have fallen from the pages above. These literary fragments are drawn from the neighborhood's diverse literary history, featuring English, Italian, and Chinese texts from over 90 authors, including Beat Generation writers, SF Renaissance poets, and Chinese writers. The artists designed the plaza floor in the Atrium of the SFMOMA.'Language of the Birds' not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the area but also serves as a reminder of the importance of literature, culture, and communication. It's a place where people can gather, reflect, and draw inspiration from the written word, celebrating the unique spirit of San Francisco.
