Rocky Creek Bridge: A Big Sur Icon

Rocky Creek Bridge, gracefully arching over the dramatic Big Sur coast, is a testament to engineering ingenuity and scenic beauty. Completed in 1932, the bridge spans 497 feet across a deep canyon, offering visitors stunning panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Often mistaken for the more famous Bixby Creek Bridge, Rocky Creek Bridge possesses its own unique charm with its elegant design and breathtaking coastal backdrop. As one of the seven "Big Sur Arches," Rocky Creek Bridge is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, recognized for its architectural significance and its role in providing essential crossings along the Carmel-San Simeon Highway (now Highway 1). The bridge's reinforced concrete, open-spandrel, fixed, parabolic-arch design, coupled with a decorative cantilevered walkway and arched-window railings, make it a prime example of modern concrete arch construction. Visitors can stop at a turnout on the northwest side of the bridge to capture stunning photographs and soak in the serene atmosphere. The area is also ecologically significant, serving as a habitat for the endangered southern sea otter and the rare Yadon's piperia orchid. While visiting, exercise caution due to the steep cliffs and potential for strong crosswinds.
