Charles Lee, the theater opened its doors on Memorial Day in 1942. The opening was a star-studded premiere that drew celebrities such as boxer Max Baer, comedic duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, and child star Jackie Cooper. During World War II, the Fremont hosted war bond shows, demonstrating its importance to the community. The theater's interior boasts 100-foot Art Deco murals by the Heinsbergen Decorating Company, depicting flowers, charging steeds, and women in gowns. These murals, along with the neon-lit façade and swirling coved ceiling, transport visitors back to the golden age of movie palaces.In its history, the Fremont has showcased a wide array of entertainment, from film screenings to live performances by artists like Adam Ant and Yes. The Fremont Theater remains a central part of San Luis Obispo's cultural scene, hosting concerts, film festivals, and community events.
