Discover more about Tongva Park

Tongva Park, a six-acre urban sanctuary in the heart of Santa Monica, stands as a testament to innovative design and community engagement. Opened in 2013 on the former site of a parking lot, the park has quickly become a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike. Named in honor of the Tongva people, the original inhabitants of the Los Angeles Basin, the park pays homage to the region's rich cultural heritage while providing a vibrant green space for all to enjoy. The park's design, led by James Corner Field Operations (the same firm behind New York City's High Line), is characterized by its undulating topography, winding pathways, and diverse plant life. The landscape mimics the natural arroyos and rolling hills of the Southern California coast, creating a sense of immersion in nature despite its urban setting. Over 30,000 plants, representing more than 170 species, thrive within the park, showcasing the region's native flora and providing habitat for local wildlife. Tongva Park is thoughtfully divided into four distinct areas, each offering a unique experience. Observation Hill, the park's highest point, provides panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, the Santa Monica Pier, and the surrounding cityscape. Here, visitors can relax on benches and soak in the stunning scenery, or explore the park's iconic steel cocoon sculptures, which frame the views in unexpected ways. Discovery Hill is a haven for families, featuring a state-of-the-art playground and a refreshing splash pad. The playground's climbing structures, slides, and swings are designed to stimulate children's imaginations and encourage active play. The splash pad, open during the warmer months, provides a welcome respite from the California sun, with its interactive water features and shaded seating areas. Garden Hill showcases the park's horticultural diversity, with a series of themed gardens displaying a wide array of native and drought-tolerant plants. Visitors can stroll through the gardens, admiring the vibrant colors and textures, and learn about the region's unique ecosystem. The gardens also provide a tranquil setting for quiet contemplation and relaxation. Gathering Hill serves as the park's central hub, with a spacious lawn and a natural amphitheater. This area is designed to host community events, cultural performances, and informal gatherings. Visitors can spread out a blanket and enjoy a picnic, attend a free concert, or simply relax and soak in the park's vibrant atmosphere. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Tongva Park is also committed to sustainability. The park's irrigation system utilizes recycled water, reducing its reliance on potable water sources. Stormwater runoff is collected in bioswales, filtering pollutants and replenishing groundwater supplies. The park's plant selection prioritizes native and drought-tolerant species, minimizing the need for irrigation and promoting biodiversity. Tongva Park's location, adjacent to Santa Monica City Hall and within walking distance of the Santa Monica Pier and Third Street Promenade, makes it easily accessible to both residents and visitors. The park serves as a vital link between the city's civic center and its bustling commercial district, providing a seamless transition between the urban environment and the natural world. The park's popularity has spurred economic development in the surrounding area, with new restaurants, shops, and hotels opening nearby. Tongva Park has become a catalyst for revitalization, transforming a once-underutilized area into a thriving destination. Whether you're seeking a peaceful escape, a family adventure, or a cultural experience, Tongva Park offers something for everyone. Its innovative design, commitment to sustainability, and vibrant atmosphere make it a true gem of Santa Monica and a must-see destination for any visitor to the Los Angeles area. Take a stroll along the winding paths, discover hidden art installations, and immerse yourself in the beauty of this urban oasis. You'll leave feeling refreshed, inspired, and connected to the natural world.
