Discover more about Municipal Wharf

Monterey's Municipal Wharf II, also known as Wharf II, stands as a testament to the city's enduring connection to the sea. Constructed in 1926 to alleviate congestion on the original Fisherman's Wharf, this working pier offers a unique and authentic glimpse into Monterey's commercial fishing industry and maritime heritage. Unlike its more tourist-oriented neighbor, Municipal Wharf II maintains a focus on its primary function: supporting the local fishing fleet and related businesses. Here, you'll find wholesale fish companies, seafood markets, and the Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club, all contributing to the wharf's bustling atmosphere. The air is filled with the salty scent of the ocean, the cries of gulls, and the sounds of fishermen unloading their catch. A stroll along Municipal Wharf II provides a sensory experience that captures the essence of Monterey's maritime character. Observe the fishing boats as they return to port, laden with their daily haul. Watch as the fishermen unload their catch, sorting and preparing it for market. Visit the seafood markets to admire the fresh catches of the day, from glistening salmon and halibut to succulent crab and prawns. For those who enjoy angling, Municipal Wharf II offers designated fishing areas where you can cast your line and try your luck. A fishing license is not required for sport fishing from a public pier or wharf in California. Whether you're an experienced angler or a novice, the thrill of catching your own fish is an unforgettable experience. Photographers will find endless opportunities to capture the beauty of Municipal Wharf II. The pier's weathered wooden structures, the colorful fishing boats, and the panoramic views of Monterey Bay provide a stunning backdrop for memorable photographs. Keep an eye out for the abundant marine life that frequents the area, including playful sea lions, graceful seabirds, and the occasional harbor seal. Beyond its commercial activities, Municipal Wharf II also offers a range of dining options. Several casual eateries serve fresh seafood dishes, from classic fish and chips to hearty clam chowder. Enjoy your meal while taking in the stunning views of the bay and the surrounding coastline. The Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club, located on Municipal Wharf II, adds another dimension to the pier's maritime character. The yacht club provides a hub for boating enthusiasts and offers a range of services and activities. The history of Municipal Wharf II is intertwined with the rise and fall of Monterey's sardine industry. In the early 20th century, Monterey became the "Sardine Capital of the World," and both Fisherman's Wharf and Municipal Wharf II played a crucial role in supporting this booming industry. However, overfishing led to the collapse of the sardine population in the 1950s, and the industry declined. Today, Municipal Wharf II continues to support a diverse range of commercial fishing activities, ensuring that Monterey remains a vital fishing port. A recent addition to Wharf II was a 3-ton, FOB operated, public boat hoist. The hoist is available 24-hours a day 7-days. Users must complete a short instruction brief with the Harbor staff before they are authorized to operate the hoist. Please call the Harbormasters office to schedule an appointment for instruction. To the East of Wharf II is Del Monte Beach. Kayaks may be rented and launched from the beach; introductory classes and rental wet suits are available. In 1925 City officials started a drive for the construction of a new cargo Wharf to meet increasing commercial fishing demands and to relieve congestion on Fisherman's Wharf. Bonds were voted in and a new Wharf (Municipal Wharf II) was completed in 1926. In 1929 Congress appropriated funds for the construction of the present breakwater. The breakwater and its 400-foot extension was completed in 1934. While visiting Municipal Wharf II, take the time to explore the surrounding area. Del Monte Beach, located adjacent to the wharf, offers a sandy expanse for sunbathing and beachcombing. The Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail, a scenic path that stretches along the waterfront, provides a great way to explore the coastline on foot or by bicycle. And of course, no visit to Monterey is complete without a trip to the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium, located just a short distance from the wharf. Whether you're interested in maritime history, commercial fishing, or simply enjoying the beauty of Monterey Bay, Municipal Wharf II offers a unique and rewarding experience. It's a place where you can connect with the city's working waterfront, observe the rhythms of the sea, and appreciate the enduring spirit of Monterey's maritime community.
