In 1867, recognizing the importance of preserving the area's natural beauty, Joseph Warren Welch, a San Francisco businessman, purchased the first property in the state specifically to protect redwood trees from logging, known as Big Tree Ranch. F. Norman Clark, the founder of Roaring Camp Railroads, envisioned bringing the romance and color of steam railroading back to America. He acquired a 170-acre lease from Big Tree Ranch and began constructing his dream. On April 6, 1963, Roaring Camp Railroads officially opened, offering visitors a chance to experience the thrill of riding aboard authentic steam trains through the towering redwood forests. Today, Roaring Camp Railroads boasts a collection of meticulously preserved narrow-gauge steam engines, some dating back to the 1890s.
