Discover more about Napa County Historical Society

Step back in time at the Napa County Historical Society, a treasure trove of artifacts, photographs, and documents that illuminate the captivating history of Napa County. Established in 1948, the society is located within the walls of the Goodman Library, a historical landmark itself and the longest continuously operating library in California since 1902. The society's mission is to discover, preserve, and present the diverse history of Napa County, highlighting its significance within California's broader narrative. Exhibits showcase the stories of the region's earliest inhabitants, the Wappo and Patwin tribes, who lived along the Napa River long before European settlement. Visitors can delve into the era of Spanish and Mexican rule, learning about the establishment of ranchos and the lasting impact of these cultures. The Gold Rush era receives significant attention, illustrating how the discovery of gold drew prospectors and entrepreneurs to the region, leading to the growth of towns and industries. The Goodman Library, which houses the historical society, is a historical landmark in its own right. Donated by banker and philanthropist George Goodman, the library has been in continuous operation since 1902. Its unique architectural features, such as the marble-engraved inscription "God and My Mother" in the foyer ceiling and the original circulation desk, add to the ambiance of historical immersion. The building once offered billiards for gentlemen upstairs and a tea room for ladies downstairs. The Napa County Historical Society offers walking tours and guest lectures. The society also has a research library that is open to the public by appointment.
