Discover more about Oakland Museum of California

The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) is more than just a museum; it's a gathering place that explores the multifaceted story of California. Founded in 1969, OMCA brought together three historically independent disciplines—art, history, and natural sciences—under one roof, creating a progressive, multidisciplinary approach to celebrating the state's rich heritage. The museum's collections comprise over 1.9 million objects, including seminal artworks, historical artifacts, ethnographic objects, natural specimens, and photographs. These collections and OMCA's programs reveal the factors that have shaped California's character and identity, from its stunning natural landscapes to successive waves of migration and its unique culture of creativity. Visitors can explore the Gallery of California Art, which features works from the mid-1800s to the present, divided into themes like California Land, People, and Creativity. The Gallery of California History emphasizes the impact of the many people who have made the state their home, beginning with Indigenous peoples and continuing through today. The Gallery of California Natural Sciences showcases the state's diverse wildlife, climate, geology, and habitats, as well as the impact of society on them. OMCA also hosts temporary exhibitions, ensuring there is always something new to discover. OMCA's terraced gardens, designed by Kevin Roche and landscape architect Dan Kiley, are an inviting sanctuary open to the public, featuring plantings from five California ecoregions. The museum also hosts Friday Nights @ OMCA, family-friendly outdoor parties with live music, dancing, and food trucks.
