Discover more about Children's Fairyland

Children's Fairyland, a beloved Oakland institution since 1950, holds the distinction of being one of the first themed amusement parks in the United States. Inspired by a visit to a children's zoo in Detroit, Arthur Navlet envisioned a place where children could interact with larger-than-life storybook sets. With the support of the Lake Merritt Breakfast Club and Oakland citizens, his dream became a reality. Fairyland's 10 acres offer a magical experience for children under 8, with nearly 60 storybook sets, kid-sized rides, and a charming menagerie of animals. The park is also home to the Open Storybook Puppet Theater, the oldest continuously operating puppet theater in the U.S.. Visitors can explore Pinocchio's Castle, Thumbelina, and other classic tales brought to life. Walt Disney himself visited Children's Fairyland in 1954 while seeking inspiration for Disneyland. He was impressed by the park's clean, safe environment and its engaging fairytale atmosphere. Disney even recruited Fairyland's first director, Dorothy Manes, to work at Disneyland. Today, Children's Fairyland continues to enchant generations of families with its timeless charm and commitment to sparking imagination.
